Our Top Tips For Barbecuing Fruit!

Interest in plant-based lifestyles has never been greater than it is right now and, just because you’re keen to live a cruelty-free life and ditch meat products forever, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a very delicious barbecue now it’s summertime.

There’s all sorts of amazing produce you can cook on the barbecue if you want to steer clear of meat – and fruit develops this amazing smoky flavour if you grill it, which you may not have tried before.

Lots of different fruits work well on the grill, everything from watermelon and bananas to mango, pineapple, plums, nectarines, peaches… the list goes on and on! Whatever you decide to grill, however, just make sure that it’s not overripe, otherwise you’ll find that it’s likely to fall apart before you can get it on your plate.

Patience is key when it comes to barbecuing fruit so, even though you might be tempted to turn it to see if it’s done, make sure you leave it for three minutes or so before you turn it if you want to see those beautiful grill marks on the flesh of the fruit.

When preparing your fruit for the grill, cut it into big chunks, as fruit can be very fragile. The bigger the chunks, the better! This will also help prevent it from falling through the grill. And if you want to barbecue smaller fruit like strawberries, simply pop them on a skewer and away you go.

And, for our final top tip, if you’re barbecuing citrus fruit, give one side of the fruit a quick brush with some granulated sugar. This will stop them from sticking on the grill and you’ll end up with a delicious caramelised finish on the fruit. Yum!
